Sunlight, swaddling, and staying big
The following are senses that I call up when explaining somatics to folks, the “other senses”, as opposed to sight, sound, touch, taste, smell. This recurring series will include moments from my week that I noticed particular sensations, big or small, as a way to share with you about my week, and also to provide an example of what somatics even is. Enjoy!
I am a being in the realm of somatic sex education, ancestral healing, erotic healing, kink, relationship anarchy, polyamory, geomancy, and a constellation of anything else you’ve seen written here. If you would like to work with me one-on-one in any of these realms you can book with me here. Clients in the Hudson Valley are encouraged to reach out to book in-person sessions. My books are closing today, Feb. 14 and will reopen later in the year. If you’ve been waiting, now is the time.
Temperature
Cold pillows held close against my body as I curl around them.
Sunlight warmed clothes pressing against my cold skin.
The sunlight warming my skin while the air is still winter cold, which is one of my most favorite sensations in the world.
Weight
Swaddled in a duvet, wool blanket, and sheet.
Movement
I was running on the treadmill and was taken by an intrusive thought I have been battling of late. Then I noticed the movement of my breath through my lungs, and my pace steady on the treadmill, brought in a sense of bigness, and the thought became small and I became big and steady in the truth of who I am. The thought no longer mattered and could no longer hurt me.

Interoception
I noticed later in the weak the sensation of cowering when the same thought popped up. My body didn’t physically cower, but I felt that I winced and shied away from it, and tried to avoid it. This is the tactic I have been taking for a while, but I remembered to again get bigger then it. Which requires facing it head on, and standing firmly in how much bigger I am than a thought that tries to tear me down.

This is great. Especially facing thoughts that cause wincing head on. Bigness. Bigger than the thought. Wow! So glad you wrote this! Thank you!
Ooh I am so intrigued by noticing other sensations! I think this will be helpful for me moving forward.
